Bonney: Queensland Election 2024

Let’s work together to put animals on the political map.

The Alliance has joined forces with RSPCA Queensland to show voters where the parties in Queensland stand on six key animal welfare policies.

End Puppy Farming

Strengthen the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 and associated Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for the Breeding of Dogs and their Progeny (the Code of Practice) to better regulate the conduct of businesses breeding dogs for profit.

This includes:

  1. A cap on the number of litters per bitch to four in her lifetime.

  2. Prohibiting the sale of puppies and kittens from pet shops unless they have been sourced from a reputable animal rescue organisation.

  3. Powers for Inspectors to conduct routine inspections (without the need for a warrant) of commercial dog breeding facilities to ensure compliance with the Code of Practice.

Phase Out Battery Cages

Implement the agreed and endorsed Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry into Queensland legislation before June 2025 with a phase out date for conventional battery cages of 2032.

Phase Out Live Lamb Cutting

Introduce legislation to phase out live lamb cutting (mulesing) by 2030, require multi-modal pain relief while the practice continues, and promote the breeding of fly-strike resistant sheep.

Remove Shark Nets

Remove shark nets from Qld waters and implement alternative shark mitigation technology that does not endanger marine life.

State Animal Welfare Authority

Strengthen animal welfare enforcement arrangements by establishing a Queensland Animal Welfare Authority as an independent statutory body under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 with responsibility for administering the Act, and with an appropriate budget allocation to ensure adequate resourcing. (Note: this would not replace RSPCA inspectors – they would report to the Authority).

Increase Animal Welfare Funding

$15 million capital contribution to the RSPCA Qld Wildlife Hospital Centre of Excellence to meet the increasing need for wildlife care and rehabilitation services, research and education within Southeast Queensland.

How we created the scorecards

How were they created?
At the start of the election campaign we contacted all major parties and listed candidates in key electorates asking for their responses to key Alliance policies. Six of these policies are featured on the scorecards. In completing the scorecards, we took into consideration responses to our emails as well as previous public comments, voting patterns and policy decisions.

Why were they created?
The scorecards have been prepared to raise awareness of the interests of animals and prevent animal suffering by summarising the position of political parties on the key animal welfare policy issues relevant to the charitable purposes of the Australian Alliance for Animals.

Disclaimer
The scorecards represent the view of the Australian Alliance for Animals, and should not be relied upon. The Alliance does not promote or oppose political parties or direct people on how to vote.
