We are working to reform the Australian animal welfare policy system to achieve real change for animals.

The systems we use to create laws and policies concerning animal welfare in Australia are broken.

Australians care about animals. Yet our laws continue to allow live export, the use of battery cages, and the dehorning, castration and live lamb cutting (mulesing) of farmed animals without pain relief.

Australian animals deserve better. They deserve a decision-making process that genuinely takes their interests into account and ensures they are respected.

Active campaigns

It’s time for a #FairGoForAnimals

The #FairGoForAnimals campaign proposes a new framework for creating a more balanced and independent animal welfare governance system in Australia.

Better standards for chickens farmed for meat

The Australian Alliance for Animals is committed to raising the welfare standards for chickens farmed for meat in Australia.

The Alliance for Animals is working closely with Alliance core member World Animal Protection and our New Zealand-based colleagues at Animals Aotearoa to bring the Better Chicken Commitment to Australia through the Better Chicken Australia campaign.

Ending battery cages in Australia

We are committed to ensuring all states and territories implement and enforce new regulations to phase out battery cages.

The Alliance, as part of a national coalition of animal protection groups, is advocating for all states and territories to accelerate the enforcement of the phase out and to fast-track the transition to more humane cage-free production systems.

End live lamb cutting

We are committed to ending live lamb cutting (mulesing) in Australia.

Together with our allies, we are calling for a review of the National Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Sheep to phase out live lamb cutting.

End live sheep exports by sea

The Australian Parliament has passed legislation to end live sheep exports by sea by 1 May 2028. Legislating an end date for live sheep exports in this term of parliament was a key ambition for the Alliance for Animals.

Together with our core member organisations and allies, we will stay committed to monitoring the industry until the very last voyage
